It's a slowly changing attitude I'ld say, to each his own tastes naturally (and a good thing too, things might get boring if everyone starts to like the same things) but more people are coming into contact with parts of Asian culture, hard to like something you've never seen or heard.

Took a couple of decades, but manga is finally being translated in Dutch for instance. Before that it was either French or English, the latter being imports and quite expensive.

There is however a remaining attitude in general that comics, cartoons, BD's or anything like that are for kids. Despite the fact that there are plenty of comics that are for a mature audience (not for any 'adult' content) and that most adults enjoy a good comic as much as any kid. (or almost anyway)

To be honest, when parents see their kids watching Japanese cartoons like Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh or Dragonball Z, it might have made them decide that all anime and manga is like that. (no offense btw, those three were the first that came to mind!)
