Yeah, a Futon would be good for a starter. Also, you might want to get some of those mats. (forget the exact name.) Oh, a bonsai tree would look nice.
In the states I have no idea where you can buy furniture. I guess it all depends what city you are in. But I am guessing you might have to order that stuff online if you can't find a store around you. It might end up being pretty costly though.

The mats you need are called Tatami, and they are usually measured 1meter x 2 meter. I have 2 myself for my futon, worth every penny!i plan to get some stuff from Japan in december though
