Shinigamis dont kill for greed. They dont even care to kill. Remember, Ryuk describe his kind as "when you try to write names on your book, others make fun of you becasue you are trying to much"
Shinigamis usually kill to survive; when they reach end of their own life span, they simple take out from humans.
And they need eyes & books to survive, to expand their life span.
Shinigamis & Kira is soo different. Shinigamis dont care about human lifes and dont interfere yet Kira poked his nose in every opportunity.
