Shinigami are unknown to humans. Their only purpose in live is to kill humans nothing more. They sit around all day and play games because there is just nothing better to do. The Shinigami World/Dimension is a wasteland. Since Ryuk got tired of just sitting around he decided to go to the human world. Shinigami are invisible to humans, and can only be seen by one that has a Death Note. The only way for a human to have a Death Note, is if a note is "accidently" dropped, or a Shinigami chose a "worthy" person. Shinigami cannot be killed by human weapons, so even if there were a group that opposed them, it would do no good. There are only two ways to kill a Shinigami. #1 make them fall in love with a human, and then they save that human's life. Shinigami are cursed to only take life, and to not purposely save it. Therefore, if they save a life, that is their highest crime, and they are reduced to a pile of sand... #2 Stop a Shinigami from writing in a note. Shinigami must kill humans to extend their life. If they do not, then they die.

They don't kill out of greed, they do it because they need to to survive. Little information about them is known. But to humans they are "Death" the one who kills you when it is your time. I am unaware if they have their powers in their realm. For example, Ryuk and other Shinigami can phase through walls, make themselves transparent etc. In their world they have the eyes and their flight. It is guessed that the Shinigami King began the Shinigami race, and made the notebooks. Why make the notebooks? Why exist to only kill humans? These are questions that may never go unanswered. They are met for one to just use their imagination I think.
