Shinigami means "Death God" they may not look like "gods" but they are given this classification because they watch over us like gods do. But they are not watching us to make sure everything runs smoothly, and theta the Earth is working as it should, they are watching us to see which one among the human race is going to die. They may seem like parasites, but in fact I have pity for them. They exist only to kill. What if they don't want to kill? It is unknown how Shinigami are created. We don't know if they unwillingly thrown into that situation. But if they are "born" then they must kill from the start.

If humans had no birth names, and were given numbers from birth. Then the Shinigami would cease to exist. They need a first and last name to kill by.

But then you have to think, what if Shinigami evolve over time, like we do? What if they become able to kill us even if we don't have actual names? If we didn't have names, then would have something else, since in this government run world, everyone needs a number or something. So the ones in control can always know what each person is doing.
