机 means machine. Since Japanses adopted some of the simplified characters, but not all (for example 電話 instead of 电话),you might recognize 机's traditional form 機. 机 gets used in all kinds of words - like 飞机. 飞 means to fly, so a "flying machine" is an airplane. Chinese is funny that way.
