We do see kanji in a lot of tattoos...usually inked on westerners. Traditional Japanese tattoos aren't words or characters, but are art. Traditional demons, flowers, samurai, etc.

That's not to say it shouldn't be done. 力: power 愛: love 家族: family all make nice tattoos in my opinion (though aren't seen traditionally, are seen more in modern tattoos...)

Beyond that your friend's idea, though as nice as it is, is translatable into Japanese, but isn't a Japanese concept. People that get tattoos in Japan (samurai, yakuza, bikers) don't talk about crying. I mean it's one thing to talk about it, and another to ink it onto your skin for life.

You know how we can laugh at Japanese ads or t-shirts with funny Engrish? Think of that in reverse...
