I studied abroad in Japan for a year while in college. It was total immersion for me. I also got an internship there (at a law firm), which you can do on a student visa. It's expensive, but most of the bigger universities offer these types of study abroad programs to Japan. I highly, HIGHLY recommend it if you can do it.
