But then again it's surely not that bad. Every country has a bit of nationalism or racism or whatever. Same with sexism.

People who tell tales of Japan being really racist or sexist just see what they want to see.

i agree. every country has its own narrow-minded personalities. i myself has experienced some form of discrimination based on my gender, skills, built, or nationality -- from fellow nationals!!!

i am a female electrical engineering graduate from the top university in my country. after doing policy work for the government for a few years, i tried to switch careers and go into the mainstream engineering industry. i was disappointed to find out that a lot of companies (if not most of them) hire only male EE's to do the technical work for them, and hired female engineers only to do their sales!

anyway, i am now considering an offer to work in Japan as a programmer (which i believe i'll enjoy doing better than i would the EE stuff), and i'm thinking that this might (at last) be the start of something good. i have thought of seeing japan since i was 10 years old, but now i have the chance of experiencing life in japan for an extended period.

so, to forgotenmemory, i want to say that there may come harsh realities in your life that you cannot control or have any influence on, but these you have to face and deal with (without violence, i hope *wink*). however, you can't let these things hinder you in striving for what you want to be or what you want to achieve.
