In japan if you say to your colleague "男があなたをよんでるの" (literally in english- "theres a man/boy calling you"
To them, they would understand it as "Your man/boy is here", implying that its your boyfriend or husband or whatever
same case with using おんな

So they say "男の人" for male, and "女の人" for female when refering to the respective gender. Similarly 男の子 and 女の子 for male/female child.
