There are only two scenarios in which I beleive fansubs and scanlations are justified.

1. If a sereise is unlicensed in the language that you speak. Yes, its still ilegal but if thats the ONLY physicaly possible way that you could read the sereise. Still, if the sereise is eventualy licensed in english, I ALWAYS buy the english editions.

2. if a sereise is discontinued, and I can no longer read in english, I will continue the sereise by reading scanlations, unless/untill the sereise is picked up again.

In any other case I think its moraly wrong. You wouldnt steal a CD from a store because you cant afford it, and its the only way you can hear the music. Thats not how life works. Nice things are only for people who work hard to afford them. If you cant afford to buy anime/manga, then you shouldnt be watching/reading it.

oh, and I supose if you missed an episode and want to catch up, and are going to buy the DVD anyway, then its not so bad...
