Japan is a conformist country, and the most important thing to the Japanese to fit in. However, it is a free country, and you can think or do whatever the hell you want (as long as you are being respectfull).
But I think people exagerate the conformism. Its not like they are all living in a distopian society where everyone is forced to look act and think the same. And on some degree, every country has social norms that you are expected to follow, and not stick out of the crowd.
Im seeing a lot of expression and freedom from Japan now (more than ever), because I think the younger generations are getting tired of conformism, and are kind of trying to break free from that.

Is it the animes fault? I think it has some responsibility. But I would think it is an overall effect of daddy touching her, guys touching her, and low self esteem. then compund this with drama queen friends and a slave camp school... If you search the mainichi paper, tokyo times, Japan times... there are stories like this all over the place.

I don't think the man raped her. When the girl was questioned she said "he was meeting other women, so I thought I would give him the Guillotine."
The girl was clearly mentaly ill. So either the father was inocent...or (I really hope thi isnt what was happining) he was doing things to her, that she liked, or accepted.
Also the younger daughter said that there father "was always kind to us, and never acted violantly"
