i agree with you. since i've been on this forum and reading lots of threads i've noticed that people think japan is some kinda perfect society with no crime and people are PERFECT. and whats worse, they generally tend not to accept it when someone tells them its not true. i don't know if its cos they are kids/ignorent, but i'm sure if they ever go to japan they'll find out.

As for your description about the mcdonalds thing etc etc. i'd have to say that is quiete acurate from my experience. In my uni, i'm responsible for making NEW foreign students welcome and also i'm the guy that shows them the uni/town/shops/banks etc etc etc. what i've noticed is that BOTH chinese and Japanese seem a little clueless at first. They don't know what to do without me "holding their hands". where as americans/russians/australian/spanish etc etc seem to be fine. they only need my services for about an hour or two.

But i kinda gotta disagree with you about the english as a second language in korea/china and other asian countries... they might study it at school, but most of them don't have a clue. its like english people studying french. they might study it for 8 years but they are mutes. to me this is strange. cos they ahve to have a certain level in english before they come to uni. EILS or something like that. from what i've seen both in china and here in my uni, most people don't know english. they know some words here and there, but i would never say its their second language. or near to being a second language.
