Are you sure that Japanese dont usualy speak english as a second language? Because when I was in Japan (no it was not over 6 months) everyone I talked to (under the age of...umm 4o maybe?) knew fluent english. You would probably know more than me, I'm not trying to argue with you (at the moment) I'm just asking.
One more thing (it's irelevent, I just thought I would ask since you live in Japan) is it currently possible for a foriegner to become a Japanese citzen? I heard it wasn't, but I'm not really sure how acurate my source was.

I dont think you see what I am saying. Said the younger people are changing and being more open minded. I said Yes but, it is just a fad. So, When I see them in Harajuku dressed in all kinds of crazy stuff, I am like, RIGHT ON!!!! The hell with the system! But, this will only last till about 22. Then when they go get a job, they revert back to the collective.
About speaking english, you may have been with a group who focuses on speaking english. That is cool. When you come to Tokyo again, we will take a walk to shinjuku or shibuya and we will try to spend our day as a gaijin and only speak english. Dont say i did not warn you.
As far as becoming a citizen, you can. It is tough. Most people get perminant status. You can do anything a Japanese can do exept Vote.
