That is a good question. Yes, you will probably hear that more often than sentences using 'motsu'. But when you are talking about things that are more important than just a pen or a 50-yen coin, such as home, car, or strong sentiment about something/someone, 'motsu' would be the choice of verb for a careful speaker.
