Drifting in Japan is awesome, the japanese started it and they rock at it.
A lot of super hot drift cars can be seen by night on some popular mountain passes. A lot of young people tune up their cars and race. The police pretend not to see these drifterm, they tolerate them until they race by night on closed roads. Instead, when they race in the city or on open streets, the police is very hard on them.
Anyway, getting into the drift scene there isn't easy as watching Fast and Furious Tokyo Drift. A lot of people have seen and liked the movie, they get to Japan and are like "omg now I'll challenge the best guy, win and I'll be the next drift king".
True drifting has nothing to do with Tokyo Drift or Initial D, but it's indeed great fun.
You will never be able to drift in Japan at all unless you:
1. have your own car (no one will be so stupid to lend his precious car to a total stranger)
2. have a japanese driving license or an international permit (you have to bring your car to the mountains on public roads, and if you get in trouble, and it turns out you aren't able to drive there, you're so screwed! )
3. are able to drift (people take their cars on popular mountain passes to drift, not to bump into some guy who smashes his car on their precious rides!)
4. know some people who are into drift there (they will introduce you to other people and to the courses).
