Lack of popularity isn't the problem, but more than likely lack of talent. Ultimate Fighting, Pride, etc. is very popular in the US now, so potential fighters may be going there instead of Japan. 10-15 years ago Ultimate Fighting was still in its infancy, so K-1 fighters could come to Japan from all around the world and really make a living. There were only a dozen plus big fighters, so they would fight each other over and over again. It was great entertainment, because you could see the same fighter change his strategy against an opponent he lost to just months earlier.
