Well I suggested it only because it's hard to learn on your own without some form of formal teaching. (I know from personal experience. ) If you are really serious about it then you should go to a bookstore or look online for books to help you learn grammar/vocab/etc. It also really helps to have someone to actually talk to, as in person to person contact. But while there are people on the forum who know Japanese, (MMM for example) it is pretty much impossible for them to actually TEACH you. The most they can (and sometimes want) to do is help you through your learning process by reinforcing what you are learning on your own. It is really hard to teach as apposed to help.

I will say that you should start with the basic Kana and for that you really don't need a book. (They're everywhere on the internet.) But as far as grammar goes, you want to be careful about using the net. So I suggest getting some books that fit your learning style, begin your learning, and use Japanforum/members as more of a supplementary tool.

Good Luck!
