I've heard plenty of guys use the なの question form, but you're right that it does seem to get preference over the case where you don't use なの at all in cases where there is an implied reason to use it. I personally
feel like it's fine to use either way. But I'm not a native speaker and I don't even do E-J translation, so I couldn't say for sure.
