Osaka "for the day" from Tokyo will consist of 6+ hours on the bullet train (I don't think you can use the rail pass to ride the fastest shinkansen) plus travel from the Shin-Osaka to whereever you want to go and back.
If you are only going to be there for 7 days, I might stick closer to Tokyo, like Yokohama...
