American media is the same way. Very sexist.
And in my opinion there are quite a few portrayals of strong women in Japanese media. Especially Miyazaki's works.
I agree with his complaint, but I definitely don't think it's limited to Japan.
Q: Who cares what other people think?!?!
A: Japanese people do.
