If I remember correctly, they betrayed the survivors in order to be allowed to leave. In the finale Walt and his father were given a boat and left.

The reality was that the boy that played Walt was growing faster than the pace of the show. That's why (in an inside joke) Locke referred to his encounter at the end of season three as "A tall Walt shot me" or something like that.
