Moving to Japan for 10 months - 02-29-2008, 12:42 AM

Hi,

Basically, i'm wanting to go to Tokyo for 10 months, starting in August. I'll just be out of high school, so I'll be 18 years old by the time i'm there. I'm from UK, so I'll be getting a Working Holiday Visa. Just a few questions:

As i'm 18, I know it's going to be very, very hard, and I have a very, very small chance of getting a job as an ALT (age and no degree), so I'm wondering about English teaching. I have to be able to pay for most of my living expenses, but my parents will help me out with some money. I'm wanting to stay in an apartment there, which I'm guessing is going to cost me around 120 000yen. Add on money for food, transportation etc, and I'm guessing I'll need about 160 000yen a month?

I'm aware of private tutoring, as well as GABA, so I'm just wondering how I can cover my expenses. I know of someone who is in Japan right now, 18 years old and doing thes types of work, so I know I have at least a chance. How much can I expect to make from GABA and private English teaching? (also, how is it I can get a job through GABA?). Can anyone tell me about your experience with teaching like this? Also, I have got no idea how hard it is to find students, so if you could give me some info, it would be much appreciated

Do you think I could cover my living expenses by private teaching? I'm not really aware of any other ways I could find work.

Appreciate any help,
Thanks
