i would say the simple answer is yes but traditional characters and not the ones used in mandarin, which are simplified.
also japan has created some of it's own characters and they have simplified some of the characters in their own way. eg 楽 also some of the characters carry different meanings to those in Chinese. eg. 豪 can mean australia in Japanese but not in Chinese.
