Lol, I don't think he would have made it look so "kawaii!!" if he had a phobia that terrible Much less had Lucy befriend it, and forced us to feel sympathy for it. ;_; Unless he was a mental retard, who thought cute little puppies should be tortured to death simply because they're too cute. But if that was the case, it would be a tad of an overstatement to say he wrote such a beautiful anime xD
What I feel it symbolizes is:
Love is a double-edged sword containing an enormous power supply. From it, is derived hatred. If you can control it, invincibility is in your hands, and you control how your life is changed. If you lose your will and courage to love, you're just demonstrating a bad mutation of it. This thin line between love and hate is life.
There's no such thing as happy endings, for when you find true love, happiness is everlasting.
