This is something many people think about also. In my family, I'm the only one who ever eats sushi and I really REALLY love it. But I also know a few friends(online) who've tried and disliked it.

When I first decided to try sushi, I was kind of scared also. It looks a bit weird and smells kind of funny sometimes too. But you need to get the courage to try it out at least once. My first try wasn't all that great, but then I ended up trying different kinds later and they tasted very good(to my surprise)!

The first one I really liked(and still do) is the spicy tuna. It's an inside-out roll, so the taste of the nori/seaweed isn't as strong as another ordinary roll. And of course, it's called spicy because there's also a spicy sauce with the tuna and rice, which gives it a very good taste. You should definitely try it out! You'll see, you'll get hooked to it! Another good one to try is Salmon Skin sushi. It's an inside-out roll as well, and it's crunchy inside. Though not every japanese restaurant offers them(not every single one in my area, anyway).

Really, you shouldn't be scared. The raw fish doesn't taste like fish at all, and I personally don't find it has any kind of weird texture either. What you smell is actually the vinegar in the rice and the nori when smelling sushi. You're best bet is to order a dish you like, along with one set of sushi(one roll, generally six pieces). That way at least, you'll have something else to fill you up if you don't like the sushi. If you know someone that likes sushi, bring them along, they can make recommendation! Or, you can always ask the waiter/waitress for some tips. Just let them know you'd like to try sushi for the first time!

Good luck ^-^
