I really had no problems at all with the AI or the gambit system.

There was a time or two when a character didn't do what I wanted them to but (guesstimate) 95% of the time it was working fine.

I don't see the problem either with having to expand your abilities. The way the difficulty scales it would be too overpowered if you had access to every slot on a character and all the commands from the get go. Easy games are lame.
