it is the thought of the serial killer, or for that fact any criminal, even master minds or jefry dommer. The robberer robs for a goal...usually to buy something or for his own feelings towards money. Most people would say that money equals power (not a definite truth). SO the more he steals the more of a power trip he gets. then he Gets what you would call GREED. Same for the man who rapes...power. Same for the person who cheats. usually its either vengeance (whether it be for a current lover or a lover long gone) or they don't have alot of self confidence, so they go after power.
For those who do those convents and then kill their whole clan for a belief, They really do believe this belief. Whether its true, or not I don't know, but they believe it and that's all that really matters. Humans are really simple beings. they can think up the MOST complex contructions...but you must drink water, and eat edible (usuallly sugar rich i.e.: bread, rice, yams, potatoes, vegetation, with a heathy supply of meat), you must sleep, and you must excrete waste, and you must die. You need a family, a father mother combination usually sets a good stage for your development (whether it be good or bad depends on your mother-father and family situation), your first 6 yrs. are your most important. the 6 after that venture further away from the parents and more to the village, the last 6 now deal with the world on a grand scale, sex is already developed its ideas within the human being by this time, therefore most people have actually had sex already by the time they are 18. At 18, depending on where you are on the planet, are developed to do what you want...of course, with that comes the responsibility of what you want...making you an adult, able to make offspring of your own and redo the whole cycle yourself with your offspring. The life expectancy rate in america is almost 200% from 200 yrs. ago. with the life expectancy rate now about 85 yrs. old.... (it was about 35 back then). So you tell me, what is complex about humans? We usually see our world the way our family and friends, then school (in this order) see things. We have a thing called Electronic media, which now bombards our every choice in life with things from plastic surgery to soy milk... The world as whole and all its systems have grown disturbing complex, BUT humans have not changed with them. Our tools are now smarter than us...is all that has happened...
