Hmmm, man has struggled with that question for an eternity. It's a bit like asking why we exist. Maybe it's not the best definition, but somebody once told me,

Who said anything about complexities? Choosing whom you wish to live your life , is one of the most basic things! It is one of the core fundamentals. It has been so since before recorded history.
The question is whether the life she has chosen for herself, is acceptable. Maybe it is. Maybe she has made a mistake. Only she can determine if her reasons are valid. She would not be the first woman to choose an older man. Do not think that they only do for money or prestige, for most are not that way. You said before "...someone who has lived over half of their own life expectancy could VERY well understand someone who hasn't ..." Maybe it is as simple as, she appreciates that he understands her.
