As much as i dislike US foreign policy, i think they should keep their forces in Japan due to their strategic value in the southern Asia region.

Protection from what? They are not there for protection, they only act as a shoulder to daunt N.Korea (and in some ways also China).

Russian military influence? In Japan? It's not the19th century anymore. The only local military interest they seem to have right now is in the SW part of Asia.

I strongly suggest you look for Robert Stinnett's Day of Deceit, if you haven't read it yet.

More advanced? In some areas yes, but they are bot as flexible as the US armament, mostly practicing "head on" philosophy with little regards to stealth or tactics (this seems to be strong rooted in their military machine since the WWII lol), not to mention heavy shortage in quantity of this equipment and the overall poor qualification and low morals of their troops. Nevertheless they are still a force to reckon with.

Nope, they have modernized the armament of their strategic forces. A lot of the nuclear warheads that survived the collapse of Soviet union have now been re-utilized and put in-to new carrier missiles. Others have been dismounted and/or sold to other countries (rumors, o/c).
