I'm not gonna have an open mind about it because I LOVE DragonBall/Z. Any fan of anything wants the best for what they're a fan of.
It's not just how a character looks but the principle of it. If they make concessions with looks and what not then they will also make concessions with the story and everything else.
That is probably one of my underlying problems with this type of project.
As far as that particular actor playing Goku, I just find Goku to have a very innocent quality. They make his actions so child-like, even when he's grown up in DBZ. In fact I think he becomes even more child like after he beats Frieza, having found a new confidence in himself. From the way he responds to people to the way he will sleep.
Anyway my point is that I want an actor that can portray this innocence. If needs be then do auditions till someone fits the bill in the most perfect way possible.
To me Goku should also be played by an Asian person because he just fits that bill. He doesn't have any Western qualities whatsoever which would define him to be played by a Western character. It also reminds me of Hollywood "Whitifying" everything, the same they do with everything and always have throughout history. Just look at movies like The Departed or The Last Samurai. It annoys me that these movies have roles that fit Asians better but they are re-written for White people or played by White people just because it should appeal to that particular audience more.
Bleh I dunno, it's something along the lines of "Keep it the same as the original" that I want, instead of changing it to please the masses.
