Well, I think he makes deep and meaningful music. He expresses feelings and thoughts, it's talk about important stuff, like politics, drugs, oppression, affection, etc.

Yes he does make rock. That is the overall genre. I wasn't being very specific what sub-genre but MM is known as a "rockstar" above all else. He goes to rock awards and comes on rock tv channels.
As for his deep and meaningful music, I think the majority of people don't listen to his music because it is deep or meaningful. They like the catchyness of it and because it is just Raw music to them which they can easily listen to.
Again, that is my experience with people anyway.
If he wanted to talk about deep and meaningful stuff, he could make it more obvious for the listener.
First impressions count for a lot. Once you like an artist for what you initially perceive them as, it'll take some effort to think of them as something else.
