As someone who has taught Japanese, as fun as it is to "bring in" those retired characters (and don't get me wrong, I love them, too) making your teacher look goofy and forcing her to explain why this character isn't in use anymore is kind of a low-blow. Yes it exists. No, she wasn't hiding it from you. But it is kind of like spelling "old" as "olde". No, it isn't "wrong", but it doesn't help things.
