I once wrote an essay in English on that question, but I don't think you wanna read 1500 words on that. *lol*
I had different sources, but the result was mainly that: Geisha are entertaining women (gei = art; sha = person). In the Tokugawa-jidai there were rules which forbade them to get too close to a customer. And today a real geisha-education is so expensive, that it doesn't seem very logical to me that they are just prostitutes.
