Kanji, I don't think Arthur Golden's novel is the best source to base your opinions on. He was actually sued by Mineko Iwasaki, the geisha he interviewed before writing his book, for defamation of character or something. Besides, his was a fictional story: he was telling a story, not explaining what life as a gesiha's like.
I insist, if you wanna get some reliable knowledge on the matter, read Liza Dalby's
Geisha. She was the first non-Japanese woman to become a geisha and she knows what she's talking about.

had to become prostitues during the postwards days of 40ies/50ies. But originally, being a gesiah did not imply having to have sex with the clients.
