I think it's a personal choice but if some of you are thinking about living in Japan, you should be careful.
For most Japanese, Vegetarian means no meat but seafood is ok.
So when they find out that you cannot eat both meat and seafood, many people won't get it.
In Japan, there is a word, tabezugirai, meaning that you are picky and choose to dislike something without trying. This is viewed as a childish behavior.
Also, because eating out is such a big part of the culture, you could very much spoil the fun for the whole group.
Good friend of mine has been a vegetarian for years before she came to Japan but after few years, she gave up and decided that fish is ok. Because she had to go out with her Japanese friends and her colleagues, she had to make necessary adjustments.
In another occasion, my friend hosted a BBQ and there were many guests. There was this Jewish American girl and as you know, she couldn't eat pork. My friend got so pissed saying that she spoiled the fun and if that's the case why did she come to Japan?
Be careful otherwise you will be called KY!!
Anyways, good luck to those who are heading to Japan!!
