I will be spending two weeks in Japan next fall, so I want to learn as much as I can till then. I am teaching myself, and in 1 weeks time, I have learned 60 different words and have been trying to use them as much as I can throughout the day. I have worked them into my daily routine, for example, when I use the phone, I refer to it as "denwa". I figure if I keep up at this pace, by next fall I should be in good shape for when I go to Japan. I will be going with 17 other students who are not planning on learning the language, so I will be the only one familiar with it. I would rather not have to completely depend on a translator, and since I love Japan in general, learning to speak Japanese is very enjoyable. Good luck with however you decide to learn it. There are a lot of different software programs and study books available now. You can even start by simply looking online at free websites that get you started.
