But Mello and Near combined is pretty much L. Near is the calm, playful side, where as Mello is the impulsive one. These traits can all be seen in the L that died.

I honestly had no problem with neither Near nor Mello. I really liked those two and their different ways of approaching the situation made the story really interesting, imo.

I still wonder if my feelings would be different regarding L's death, if I'd watched the series before I'd read it.
