There's not that much innovation in FF. And unless I'm mistaken, Dragon Quest was an equally popular JRPG (but then FF7 hit the market).
Also, how can you say it brought about the role playing genre? What it did was present JRPG's to the western public, who were used to playing other types of role playing games where you actually role played (D&D anyone?)
But yes, FF did make RPG's rather popular (at least JRPG's), so yeah.
