Love's Pretender *story* - 05-21-2008, 08:04 PM

I'm still writing on this so I'll post more as I come up with it...but I want to know what you guys out there think so far, and yes, there's vampires in it.

“So shall you cast glance upon this wretched Earth, full of sorrow, greed and sin and take no heed to reach out a hand to the mortal souls below. That is the way of angels.”

Love’s Pretender

(Preface)

When I was small, my grandmother would always be waiting for me at the end of our long dirt driveway after school. I often wondered how she managed to get that whole way without having to drive. She always told me that driving wasted gas and money. Her cat Rin would always meow after she said it, I guess he was just agreeing with what she said. After asking the same old question every day, one day she told me something different-something that would change my perspective of people forever…

“You’re not like everyone else…you’re special. You have magick that will make people fall in love with each other.”

I thought she was crazy. Maybe it was a sign of age? What was I, cupid? When I asked her what she meant, she said it to me again. After the second time I knew it had to be true. So I decided to go to school with what she said the next day. There were thousands upon thousands of possibilities in that building of 1500 students. I paired up the most bizarre-the biggest prep and the nerdiest nerd. It seemed like a scandal to the rest of the school population, but I knew better…my grandmother had been right all along.

“Kari! Get up you’re late as it is!” Cecilia Warlow, grandmother of a girl that could also be called cupid, yelled, “Will’s already here!”
I sat up straight and threw the covers back, “Oh crap.” I was supposed to be at a fey meeting in less than 15 minutes according to my digital clock floating from the ceiling (One of Grandma’s special gifts).
I ran into my closet and threw on a plain black turtleneck shirt and jeans and took the stairs two at a time. Unfortunately Will just happened to be on his way up, so I crash-landed into him.
“Holy-Shit Kari! Nice outfit by the way. Looks good for a fancy meeting like this one where you have to get your license reinstated.” Will griped pulling us both back up off the floor. He was not too tall but not to short for me with short purplish-black hair that had a single streak of robin blue hanging over his gold eyes.
Not normal? None of my buddies are…well…Will’s my only buddy my age at the moment. I guess no one wants to hang around a fairy and a vampire all of the time. Yes. That is exactly what Will is-a vampire. Rumor has it that they are addicted to Fairies, but he doesn’t seem to act that way around me. I guess it’s my “extra-special gift” that my mother gave me.
“What no smart ass remark today?” Will asked giving me a sideways look as we walked into the kitchen.
I jumped when he spoke. Still getting used to the-what do you call it-velvetiness of his voice? “Huh?”
“Never mind.” He sighed and gave my grandmother a hug, “Thanks for letting me be the one to escort her to the court today. I’m kinda surprised you didn’t want to take her.”
She shrugged and waved him away, “I’m getting too old for that now. I’m counted as a senior citizen these days! I can’t go traveling to a crazy place like that now can I?”
Will lifted an eyebrow, “Really? All I see is a woman in her early twenties standing in front of me.”
She laughed childishly, “I only hide my looks from the mortals so I can live out here in peace. I don’t want any trouble from the F.B.I!”
Yeah…she can hide her true age, which happens to be 583 years old.
“We’ve gotta go Grandma.” I stated plainly as I grabbed Will’s arm to drag him to the door.
She nodded, “Be careful. I don’t trust Will’s crazy driving after all.” I knew she was lying; she loved it.
“Whatever.” I replied shutting the door.
Will drove a shiny, silver 03 Mustang that I was extremely jealous of. I may have been 17, but I never had a nice car from my parents; my parents were already dead. Plus Grandma didn’t believe in making money out of leaves. That just wasn’t her cup of tea so to speak. So I was stuck with Will and his tricked out car.
I climbed into the passenger side still fuming about his car for the hundredth time and clicked my seatbelt into its spot. Will had already beaten me inside and was messing with the stereo. He always did that when I rode with him; it was like he didn’t want me to hear the stuff he listened to when he pulled up.
“What is it that you always listen to when I’m not in here?” I finally asked as he put the car in reverse.
He seemed dumfounded for a moment then replied, “boring stuff that you probably wouldn’t like. I always change it to what you prefer.”
I sighed, “Now it worries me.”
“Why? It could just be the weather channel for all you know.” He added snidely.
I sighed. I could feel another fight coming on. That was the last thing both of us needed.
“Never mind. Let’s go.” I finished as he sped down the dirt road.
My grandmother and I live out in the countryside of Kentucky where it’s all meadows and woods. There are a few cliffs, but they’re not what you’d call “dangerous”. We do get an occasional wild animal to cross every once in a while. Will handles that for us. He says he likes the change in diet; that’s what he refers to as his ‘inside’ joke.
It took us a while to reach the old bridge that led back into civilization. It lay over a medium-sized creek that we use for fishing in the summertime.
“Alright. Everyone out.” Will grumbled shutting the car off and getting out before I could unfasten my seatbelt.
This was the usual routine. Leave the car and cross the bridge barrier into Lavaria, the main city for Fey like me. Only creatures with magick could cross over, normal people just went into town.
I sighed and followed behind him, “I hope there’s no exam I have to take because I sure as hell didn’t study!” I tried to laugh but it came out as cough.
He gave me a sideways glance, “I went with another fairy like yourself once for the same thing. There wasn’t one back then. I can’t say the same for modern times.”
“Makes me wonder how old you really are Will.” I whispered as he took my hand.
We glided through the barrier easily. What lay on the other side was amazing. The city was huge with its buildings like castles that were white as snow. Street venders lined every shop and alleyway opening and sold anything you could imagine.
