Many of my generation of Americans look upon the term "Lolita" negatively because of the 1962 movie of the novel. With the subject matter being pedophilia, what else would you expect? And that is where the term for the clothing style came from, so one should expect a bit of disapproval from maintstream adults, especially in western culture.

Personally I try to ignore its origin and just appreciate the fashion. But its sort of like asking someone into sado-masochism to ignore the kid walking through the mall in a slave's collar. Its difficult to disassociate the fashion from its history ..... unless you were born after the history became mere fashion and wasn't taught it first.

And yes, I read the book after I saw the movie.
