I'd say go for one shade lighter than black. Nice and dark, but less artificial looking.
What ever you decide on color, do the the color first - then the cut. Your hair will fare better that way and what ends up being the tips will not have absorbed more dye than the rest of your hair. It can really make a difference when going darker.
