Earthquakes reach the news abroad so you may get the impression that many people die from them, but in my 3 years in Japan, the number of casualties has been low (sadly I probably wouldn't be saying that if I lived in China right now).

Most modern homes have some sort of shock-absorbing foundations (even some old wooden temples do, amazingly).

Having said that, I think they are expecting a big one in the Kanto area (around Tokyo) sometime in the next decade or so. Hope I wrong on that one.
