Of course I don't know the exact facts (like which countries you are from, your age, how long you do know each other etc. - but important facts), but sometimes things turn out that way. At least it is very honest of him to tell you that distance is a problem for him. Sometimes couples break up after years because of distance.
I know you must feel horrible now. Maybe you should talk to him about your feelings. But if he doesn't want to try it, you cannot force it. It is possible that you end up even more hurt than now.
