As xYinniex said, Japanese rice is short grain. I use calrose rice, as that's easily available here in Canada. It was also recommended by a Japanese lady who makes the sushi for a supermarket here.
I wet my hands with water with a little rice vinegar (the straight stuff, not the ready-prepared sushi mixture with sugar and salt) added to stop the rice sticking to my hands too much.
