Does it sound right?

The first sentence was done much better than the second. I would write them as follows:

実はケベックに住んでいる人の多くがあまり日本語を話 せません。

モントリオールは初めてひとりで行った英語のあまり通 じない場所だったので少し緊張しました。

I would use 通じる/通じない in the second sentence as that sounds much more natural.

「英語のあまり通じない場所」 = "a place where English is not used much "

But if you must use the verb 話す in the second sentence, you may change it to :

「モントリオールは初めて行った英語があまり話されな い場所だったので少し緊張しました。」

But that sounds very much 'translated'.
