IV was released Dec 20th in Japan, it did fairly well...
Revenant Wings also did fairly well, in it's own right...
It wasn't a major title.... therefore it wasn't expected to be ZOMFG...
didn't mind vaan, at least he wasn't emo like Squall...lol
