But I have a few Brazilian friends and we speak English and Japanese to communicate. It's fun and I feel much easier when I am with people from overseas than when I am with local Japanese people...

yeah, as any Latin language, Portuguese has female and male elements....I hope most Brazilians who live in your hometown are not troublemakers as well as a bunch of fools who don't respect local culture like those who live in the U.S., for instance.....
I´m not sure if either my English sucks or is simply nice.......I've sought to be humble over my language studies though.....
I envy you as you have a group of dudes to keep having conversations with....
