I used the 18 kippu quite a lot when I lived there, it's a great money savings if time is not an issue (since local trains can be very, very slow compared to the bullet trains and such). I never did travel to the Ise shrine, even though I lived across the Kii peninsula from it, in Wakayama (I guess I figured the other side of the Peninsula looked about the same as "my side", so I didn't go...). But I did pass through Nagoya to Osaka on my way home from Tokyo by 18 kippu, so I know at least that part of the trip.
