Yeah, I found learning Kana and Kanji first is easier, because sometimes learning Japanese from a book or CD, it will be in that form and not rōmaji.

It's a little pricey, but I've heard Rossetta Stone is a great way to learn a language. I don't know from experience, but the website offers an online tutorial.

Learning Japanese will take time, partially because the writing system is completely different, and also because it's hard work! : D
